Miraculous healings and dream visions in the shadow of war
The Pomeranian Superintendent General Jakob Fabricius and the Lutheran miracle fountains
Lecture by PD Dr Hartmut Kühne
Even after the Reformation, belief in miracles was still widespread among Protestants. Especially in the middle of the 17th century, at the end of the Thirty Years' War, the hope that God would miraculously enable the healing of suffering began to be linked to certain miracle springs, i.e. Protestant places of pilgrimage supervised by pastors, which attracted thousands of visitors. There were also such healing springs in Pomerania. A Pomeranian Lutheran, the general superintendent Jakob Fabricius, played a special role in their creation. These almost unknown connections will be discussed in the lecture.
PD Dr Hartmut Kühne, theologian and historian, is a specialist in the history of piety in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. His fundamental study on the Lutheran miracle fountains, which is also his habilitation thesis, will be published as a book in March 2026. He currently teaches at the University of Leipzig.
