‘I sing so as not to cry’: Psychoanalytical reflections on the music of the Argentine tango
As part of the ‘Psychoanalysis & Art’ series with Mechthild Kessler (Tübingen)
The Argentine tango emerged at the end of the 19th century, during a period of profound economic upheaval and global migration. The phrase ‘a short song for a long farewell’ aptly captures the atmosphere of loss and parting, which was never fully resolved but rather became an identity-forming way of life.
This lecture explores the ways in which tango music both conveys the melancholic mood associated with loss and, at the same time, opens up a creative space for expression. Exemplary song lyrics and audio examples, as well as the history of the tango’s origins, are examined in relation to psychoanalytic considerations.
For the research on which this lecture is based, Mechthild Kessler was awarded the 2021 Research Grant by the Foundation of the German Psychoanalytical Association.
Event organised in cooperation with the Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania e.V. (IPPMV) in conjunction with the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Regional Association of the DGPT.
