The Croy Tapestry and the religious culture and politics of its time
Public evening lecture by Professor Dr Dr h. c. Dr h. c. Thomas Kaufmann (Georg-August University of Göttingen, Chair of Church History)
The Croy Tapestry is one of the most fascinating material ‘remnants’ of the Reformation era. Above all, the close interconnection of political and theological motifs allows us to draw conclusions about the fundamental issues of the ‘age of confession’ in general, and the history of Pomerania and its religious denominations in particular. The aim of the lecture will be to contextualise the object as thoroughly as possible within its historical setting.
Thomas Kaufmann is Professor of Church History at the Georg-August University of Göttingen, Abbot of Bursfelde and one of the world’s leading historians of the Reformation. His research focuses on the history of the Church, theology and Christianity during the Reformation and the early modern period. In 2020, he was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize and became a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. In 2024, he assumed overall academic responsibility for the Lower Saxony State and University Library in Göttingen.
