The bonobos are an endangered species of great ape living in the jungles of the Congo. Benny, a young bonobo, is snatched from his mother’s arms by ruthless hunters and ends up in captivity. Alone and terrified, he is rescued by the Belgian Claudine André, the loving and courageous ‘Mother of the Bonobos’ in the Congo, who has created a sanctuary for Benny, his best friend Api and all the other endangered great apes.
