From collecting to cognition - Stalag II C in Greifswald from 1940-1945. Lecture by Thomas Bartels
Stalag II C = Main camp for prisoners of war of the Wehrmacht
It all began with a project on forced labour in Greifswald. Almost 20 years later, around 3500 letters and postcards, a good 500 contemporary photos, numerous original documents and a large number of personal objects from prisoners of war form the basis of Thomas Bartels' research into the prisoner of war camp with the main camp in Greifswald. In addition, there were meetings with Belgian and French descendants of the prisoners of war, many archive visits and chance discoveries. All these pieces of the mosaic form an impressive picture of Stalag II C.
Thomas Bartels gives an insight into his many years of research into the prisoner-of-war camp, which today is known only to a few people in Greifswald.
He has gathered many insights into the organisation of the camp and command system, the life of the prisoners and its significance for the region in the years 1940 to 1945, from Barth to Stralsund, from Rügen to Stettin, Greifswald and Ueckermünde, but also Neklade and Kartlow, Madüsee and Greifenhagen.
The evening shows many objects and tells even more stories of the more than 40,000 prisoners from many nations.
Thomas Bartels from Greifswald is a qualified historian, a curious social worker by profession and a passionate hobby researcher on the side.
