A ship does not float, it is carried
Lecture by Rainer Neumann with music
On the 100th birthday of Gerhard Dallmann
Regional series
Gerhard Dallmann was many things: soldier - deserter - prisoner of war - deacon - house father - pastor - writer - sailor - and last but not least, model boat builder. On Thursday, 18 June 2026, he would have been 100 years old.
Gerhard Dallmann was a pastor in Greifswald-Wieck for a long time and wrote novels, children's books and biographies, including about the painter Philipp Otto Runge and the musician Carl Loewe. His first novel "Logbuch und Agende" was a biographical reappraisal of his time as a soldier, deserter and prisoner of war. The novel "Das Kahnweib" describes the life of Berta Giese, a sailor's wife. It was his most successful book and was staged several times. His historical Hiddensee novel "Dornenzeit" uses archive material and old church records to reconstruct life on the island between around 1770 and 1810.
His models of historical sailing ships, which he built in his cellar shipyard, can be seen in numerous Pomeranian churches. A phrase that he often said, expressing his religious certainty in life, fits in with this: "A ship does not float, it is carried."
The lecture will be accompanied by music by Carl Loewe. Mechthild Kornow and Olga Bille will perform songs by Loewe for voice and piano.
