The diary of Anne Frank

Mono-opera by Grigori Frid based on the diary of Anne Frank German by Ulrike Patow

"When I look up into the sky, I think that all this cruelty will come to an end ..."

What does it mean to hide, to not be allowed to be there - to live forever in invisibility? What happens to a person when the world outside becomes a threat and yet hope does not fall silent?

Grigori Frid's monodramatic opera "The Diary of Anne Frank" takes us impressively into the thoughts and feelings of a girl who never stops believing in the good under her harrowing circumstances. Based on the world-famous diary, Frid condenses her experiences into a touching monologue in 21 scenes: Birthday joy, fear of the Gestapo, loneliness, falling in love for the first time and hope for liberation. Music resounds where words are not enough - tender, haunting and full of poetry.

Anne's fate is not an isolated case. Her voice is representative of millions. This opera makes the past tangible and opens up a space for compassion, reflection and hope. It is not a memorial made of stone, but a resounding, living reminder - and a powerful message to us all: never lose heart. Composed for a singer and a chamber ensemble, the work opens up emotional access to one of the most moving testimonies of the Holocaust, especially for young people from year 9 upwards.
