Epiphany concert
Matthias Schneider plays Ciaconnen by J.S. Bach, among others
Matthias Schneider will present two newly discovered and recently presented ciaconas by Johann Sebastian Bach as part of his concert: the Ciacona and Fuga in D minor and the Ciacona in G minor. In between, he will play improvisations and composed chorale arrangements. Pastor Matthias Ballke will read short text passages.
The ciacona (or chaconne in French) is a Baroque musical form that developed from a 16th-century Spanish dance. Bach's two ciaconas were previously wrongly attributed to the composer Johann Graff (1684-1750). It was not until 2025 that research revealed that the young Bach composed the two works during his employment as organist in Arnstadt.
Admission is free. Collections will go towards the planned restoration of the medieval cemetery portal.
