Adolf Pompe and the Pomeranian Song in the mirror of their sources

Research kaleidoscope

The theologian and poet Adolf Pompe was born in Stettin (now Szczecin) in 1831 and died in Demmin. However, he became famous in the Pomeranian region during his student days in Halle with a poem about the landscape of his childhood and youth. Even during Pompe's lifetime, a cult developed around his person and the "Pommernlied".

Thanks to a generous donation from the Pompe family, the Pomeranian State Museum's collection has been expanded to include objects, documents, books and photographs relating to the history of the "Pommernlied". The archival material raises questions about songs as identity-forming practices and about dealing with private and public memories.

In her biography of Adolf Pompe, Margret Ott (Pommerscher Greif) shows his early influence in Stettin, where he had musicians such as Carl Loewe as teachers. After his studies in Halle, Pompe worked in various towns in Pomerania and was involved in the Protestant revival movement.

Martin Loeser (University of Greifswald) will provide insights into the history of the creation and reception of the "Pommernlied". In addition to its musical significance, its role in the Pomeranian culture of remembrance will be discussed.

Frank Dittmer (University of Greifswald) will provide the musical framework with settings of the Pommernlied.

Finally, there will be a round table on Adolf Pompe and the "Pommernlied".
