Das System Saisonarbeit
Precarious working conditions, discrimination and the fight for rights in agriculture
Seasonal work in agriculture means one thing above all: a high degree of flexibility in terms of time and space, precarious employment relationships and a lack of social security. Mobile workers - whether in the meat industry, agriculture or the construction industry - are exposed to structural discrimination in their day-to-day work due to special regulations in labor law, as well as social and political conditions. This evening will focus on the perspectives of migrant seasonal workers in agriculture. For years, the Initiative for Fair Agricultural Work has repeatedly observed cases of massive labor rights violations in the production of fruit and vegetables. But more and more seasonal workers are fighting back, even if it is difficult to build up countervailing power.
This lecture and the subsequent discussion invites you to reflect on forms of solidarity, trade union organization and alternative structures in agriculture in order to counter the system of exploitation.
Speaker: Katharina Varelmann is a gardener and agronomist and has been working since 2015 with a focus on labor migration, seasonal work and working conditions in agriculture in a trade union context.
