Joan Didion (1934-2021) is one of the most brilliant authors in the USA. She is an icon of "New Journalism", which blurs the boundaries between literature and journalism, and is considered a master of the essay. Her autobiographical book "The Year of Magical Thinking" has also made her famous in German-speaking countries - but her literary essays are a discovery! For more than 60 years, she accompanied everyday life and the socio-political landscape of America as a critical eyewitness with a skeptical, cool gaze. She writes about hippies, military cemeteries and shocking criminal cases and combines these major themes with her own personal history. The essays from the anthology "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" were published in the 1960s and are of overwhelming foresight for our social and political present.
