Vortrag zu Thomas Manns "Der Tod in Venedig" im Rahmen der Reihe „Psychoanalyse & Kunst“
with psychoanalyst Mathias Hirsch (Düsseldorf)
Thomas Mann called the novella, which was published in 1913, "the tragedy of a degradation". The famous writer Gustav von Aschenbach falls in love with a beautiful boy on a vacation trip to Venice. Although he always maintains a shy distance from the boy, the late rush of emotion ultimately turns him into an "undignified old man".
The psychoanalyst Dr. Mathias Hirsch from Düsseldorf will present the novella as part of the lecture series "Psychoanalysis and Art": "The novella derives its tension from the dual nature of death and life, from a longing for death and rebellion against ageing through an impossible love that is supposed to mean life and brings death." In his lecture, he will focus on these dynamics.
