Die johanneische Literatur als kreative Synthese frühchristlicher Traditionen
Public evening lecture by Professor Dr. Jörg Frey (University of Zurich)
Is the Gospel of John the center of the New Testament or the climax of New Testament theology? Or does it stand at the edge, apart from other developments, even at a suspicious distance? The models for determining the relationship of the Gospels to each other and to the Pauline tradition, which is fundamental to the New Testament, have determined exegesis at least since F. C. Baur at the latest. The lecture will first outline these overall pictures and then - starting from the Gospel of John and taking up recent research trends - discuss its relationship to the Synoptic Gospels and the Pauline tradition and its position in the canonical process.
Jörg Frey studied Protestant theology in Tübingen, Erlangen and Jerusalem and, after completing his doctorate and habilitation in Tübingen, was Professor of New Testament in Jena and Professor of New Testament and Ancient Judaism at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Since 2010 he has been teaching New Testament with a focus on ancient Judaism and hermeneutics at the University of Zurich. From 2008 - 2009 he was Senior Fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg, currently he is Senior Fellow at the DFG Center 'Beyond Canon' at the University of Regensburg. In 2024 he received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University.
