Lecture Performance „unsweet candy – Molekulare Küche mit Algenzuckern“
with Astrid Brünner, Susanne Gabler and Marie-Katherin Zühlke. As part of the "Metabolat" exhibition at the Koeppenhaus
Microbiologist Marie-Katherin Zühlke (University of Greifswald) talks about the degradation of algal sugars by marine bacteria. The artists Astrid Brünner and Susanne Gabler will accompany her lecture with performances.
Every year, the algae in the world's oceans store approximately the same amount of carbon as the entire land vegetation. They produce large quantities of carbohydrates. These can be broken down by marine bacteria and represent an important source of energy for the entire marine food web. An international research team involving the University of Greifswald decoded the degradation pathway for the first time and published the study results in the journal Nature Chemical Biology in 2019.
Dr. Marie-Katherin Zühlke talks about the significance and application of these research findings.
The "Metabolate" exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the scientist Marie-Katherin Zühlke and the artists Susanne Gabler (Wismar) and Astrid Brünner (Greifswald). Installations, paintings, word art and a video work are presented on the subject of marine transformation processes. Audio contributions by scientists whose research relates to the sea in the broadest sense are also integrated into the exhibition.
Exhibition duration until 22.08.2025, Tue-Fri 2-6 pm, admission free
Fri, 22 August 2025 at 19:00 Finissage with lecture performance by Dr. Christina C. Roggatz (Dynamic Ecological Chemistry working group at the University of Bremen)
