Konvektionsströme im Erdmantel
Public evening lecture by Professor Dr. Hans-Peter Bunge (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, Chair of Geophysics) as part of the lecture series "The Moving Earth"
Large-scale convection currents take place in the Earth's interior, which drive the plate tectonics of our planet and have far-reaching effects on geological development and other processes in the Earth system. The lecture sheds light on these currents and reports on the enormous progress that has been made in understanding mantle convection from computer simulations of global currents.
Hans-Peter Bunge is head of the Department of Geophysics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. He previously taught for five years at Princeton University in the USA. He obtained his doctorate in 1996 at Berkeley University in California with a thesis on global mantle convection. His research focuses on the application of high-performance computing to problems of the Earth's evolution.
Moderator: Professor Dr. Martin Meschede
