A Touch of Defiance
Cabaret evening with the Leipzig Central Kabarett (FKK – Freie Kabarett Kultur Leipzig)
People often point to children apologetically, explaining: “They’re going through the ‘terrible twos’ at the moment.” If they’re screaming, throwing things or refusing to listen – “The terrible twos!” If they’re lying on the floor in the Rewe supermarket in front of the sweets aisle, thrashing about with all four limbs at once so that you find yourself longing for an exorcist – “The terrible twos! It’ll pass.” Really?
If you look at humanity as a whole, it seems to be collectively in a phase of defiance. We defy everything and everyone. We defy the weather, our parents, the boss, those in power, the feeling of fullness (just one more, I can just about fit one more in!) and, above all, common sense. We don’t do it for a good reason or out of conviction, but in spite of it all; often even against our better judgement. Yet, when used wisely, defiance can also bring about good. It can help to heal, topple regimes and overcome crises.
With a licence to fool about and in the name of humour, we defy defiance. Not because we can, but just because!
