Ghost Dance

A performance that combines music and theatre – and a moving ritual that champions forgotten values.

The ‘Ghost Dance’ was a ritual that emerged in response to the great crisis faced by the indigenous peoples of North America at the end of the 19th century, after Western civilisation had taken over their way of life. The dance was performed in the hope of bringing about a great transformation that would mark the end of the present world and the beginning of a better one. In a time of despair, they danced in the belief that this would turn their fortunes around. The dance was effectively banned and is associated with the shameful extermination of the population and the demise of one of the cradles of civilisation. It was one of many cries of despair in the face of the spreading wave of capitalism’s cruelty.
The performance is a symbolic evocation of this ritual in defence of dying values. It is our act of hope at a time when the next turn of the wheel of history seems unstoppable. Every generation is called upon to make sacrifices and to hold high the banners of their values, which beat in the revolutionary hearts of naïve idealists. For many years, the revolution has been the spirit of opposition for the guardians and the manifesto for the defence of minorities. We are part of that minority which must raise its voice in its own defence.

The play is an original production by the Brama Ensemble, inspired by the works of A. Ginsberg, P. Smith, the folk art of vanishing civilisations and anti-capitalist manifestos.

An event in Polish and English.
