A very special reading of Barlach's works

"As a Mecklenburger, I grew up with Ernst Barlach, grew up with his work and didn't always grow up looking at his figures."
With these words, Michael Schmal describes his lifelong closeness to Ernst Barlach - a closeness that is characterised by amazement, tenderness, humour and a deep connection to this artist and his North German homeland.
The Schwerin-born bookseller, now retired and at home in Ueckermünde for many years, has been working in the literary field since his youth: he writes, writes poetry and designs cultural spaces. He worked for many years at the Kulturwerk Vorpommern and in Ukranenland; today he runs the reading club at KULTurSPEICHER Ueckermünde, among other things.
The work of Ernst Barlach has accompanied him for decades. The volume "Ernst Barlach - Gedanken und Gedichte" (Ernst Barlach - Thoughts and Poems) is the result of this intensive occupation.
On this evening, Michael Schmal will talk about the artist's life, present selected sculptures and supplement them with his own thoughts, feelings and poetic fantasies - a personal approach to one of the most important representatives of Expressionism, whose work is inextricably linked to Mecklenburg and the north.
Afterwards, guests will relive what was probably the darkest day in Barlach's life by watching excerpts from Ralf Kirsten's film "The Lost Angel".
