Nordic Sound 2026: Terje Vigen - Silent film concert

Silent film concert with long shutter noise reduction, Sweden (1917)

The 1917 film Terje Vigen is unusual even for a silent film. It is a film adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's ballad of the same name. The 120th anniversary of Ibsen's death is not the only reason to show the film again. At the beginning of the 19th century, the superior English naval power tried to starve Norway through sanctions. The film shows how Terje Vigen smuggles food from Denmark to Norway to feed his family. His boat is captured by an English officer and he is taken prisoner by the British. The family starves to death. Many years later, Terje Vigen, an old pilot, encounters the English officer and his family in a storm on the high seas. Their lives are in his hands.

The duo Long Shutter Noise Reduction will play a concert. The music played is now called drone or ambient and is orientated towards extreme forms of metal as well as jazz, minimal music or Stockhausen's experiments. The music makes the actual main character of the film audible, namely the sea. Unlike the human figures, it does not know forgiveness - but neither does it know hatred.

Terje Vigen by Swedish director Victor Sjöströms is also of great significance in terms of film history, because he was one of the first filmmakers not to film plays, but to set the entire film outside by and on the sea. He even filmed on boats during a storm - at a time when cameras were still cranked by hand.
