Model ships tell maritime history: Guided tour of models of the Wieck church to mark the start of the maritime season - from the paddle steamer "Barussia" to the Zeesboot.

On the coasts of Europe, in the churches of many harbour towns and seafaring villages, you can find ship models that attract as much attention as altars, organs, pulpits and pews. Such ship models are known from all countries and regions in which seafaring played an important role, including Pomerania.

Due to the boom in maritime trade, the custom of donating ship models culminated in the churches of the south-west Baltic coast around the middle of the 19th century. This also applies to the oldest model in our church, the paddle steamer "Barussia von Greifswald", which was still a major exception in its day.

However, the other four ship models in the Johannes Bugenhagen Church in Greifswald-Wieck will also be discussed in the tour on the occasion of the maritime season opener on 18 April 2026 at 1 pm: the three-masted topsail schooner "Hoffnung", the four-masted barque "Pommern", a folk boat for sailing in the region and a Zeesboot, which is intended to remind us of local fishing.
