Nordic Sound 2026: Barsk - Photographs by Gudrun Koch

To the north, towards blurred light and far shadows, that's where you find the rough. Rough sea, rough nature, rough cosiness.

When the loneliness and the ruggedness of the sea hits you in the face, along with the wind, and you no longer know where the rain ends and the spray begins, then you are on the Scandinavian coasts - often with low-hanging clouds and rough-woolled, tough creatures.

In Norway, there is approximately one sheep for every two people. On the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark, there are almost one and a half sheep to one person. There are plenty of sheep and clouds to see. And of mountains and the sea.

Photographer Gudrun Koch has spent the last four years travelling around the Danish Faroe Islands and the Norwegian fjord landscapes. The results are rough and rugged impressions, some of which have been captured in photographs.
