Vernissage: Graphics by Ullrich Wannhoff at the MEERESMUSEUM
The new special exhibition with works by Ullrich Wannhoff opens at the MEERESMUSEUM on 25 February: "Between Kamchatka and Alaska - Wannhoff's prints about the Great Northern Expedition 1733 to 1743"
For the book published in October 2025 "Stranded between Alaska and Kamchatka. The naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller (1709-1746) and the Great Northern Expedition 1733-1743", Ullrich Wannhoff not only searched for clues in the north-easternmost regions of Russia and Alaska, but also researched zoological collections, libraries and archives from Berlin to Petersburg and Washington.
His travels and the history of the expedition inspired him to create numerous graphics, which were incorporated into the book and can be seen at the MEERESMUSEUM from 25 February to 17 May.
In his works, the artist uses expressive strokes to depict the harsh landscape, which drained humans and animals and turned them into competitors in the struggle for survival. Strong contrasts and sparing use of colour underline the inhospitable nature.
