A day without women
Film screening as part of the film series on the occasion of International Women's Day / What if every woman simply took a day off ...
Documentary / IS, US 2024 / Director: Pamela Hogan & Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir / 70 min.
When 90 per cent of Icelandic women walked off the job and out of their homes one autumn morning in 1975, refusing to work, cook or look after the children, they brought their country to a standstill and catapulted Iceland to the "best place in the world to be a woman".
Told for the first time by the women themselves and featuring playful animation, "A Day Without Women" is subversive and unexpectedly funny. "We loved our chauvinistic pigs," recalls one of the activists, "we just wanted to change them a little!"
The film is being released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the strike in 2025 and, with its message about the collective power of women to change their society, encourages us to rethink what is possible.
"The film "A Day Without Women" is an impressive monument to the courageous and humorous women who set this development in motion through their actions." -NDR Kultur - Das Journal
"A feel-good film that makes both sexes rejoice..." -Afro Toronto
"An inspiring documentary. Almost five decades later, you'll find yourself cheering them on as the day approaches." -DH Digital Hit
