The main work of this winter serenade is the Clarinet Quintet in B minor op. 115, a late work by Johannes Brahms. The four-movement masterpiece for clarinet and string quartet is as expressive and sonorous as a great symphony and is characterised by deeply felt melancholy, pastoral tranquillity and influences of spirited Hungarian folk music. The serenade begins with the Terzetto for three wind instruments by Gustav Holst - partly meditative, partly humorous - and tells of the lighter side of life in an impressionistic tonal language.
