Johannes Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem
Oratorio concert with the Greifswald Cathedral Choir and the Greifswald Bach Week Orchestra
Brahms' Requiem op. 45, music full of consolation and hope, will be performed by the Greifswald Cathedral Choir, the Bachwochen Orchestra, Melissa Domingues, soprano, and Stephan Klemm, bass, on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at 6 p.m. in St. Nikolai Cathedral. Clara Schumann wrote to Brahms in January 1867 after reviewing the piano score: "I am completely filled with your Requiem [...] The deep seriousness combined with all the magic of poetry has a wonderful, shattering and soothing effect". Brahms chose the texts himself - based on Luther's translation, hence the title "German Requiem" - and freed himself from any liturgical reference. Only the people and their feelings are in the foreground. Unlike Mozart or Verdi, he does not present a gloomy "Dies Irae" with a threatening apparition of the Last Judgement. The idea behind the work is the consolation of suffering souls, combined with the expectation of resurrection. Let yourself be moved by this poignant music.
The musical director is Frank Dittmer. Tickets available in advance at the Scharfe bookshop and at the box office.
Organiser: Greifswalder Domchor
