Die Gartenlaube in der Welt der Kunst
Picture lecture with Peter Weber | Stralsund, KulturDIELE M8, Mönchstraße 8, admission: 10 euros
The summerhouse is often associated with a reputation of Biedermeier escapism or even petty bourgeois narrow-mindedness. Nevertheless, its nature as a mediator between living space and vegetation, its ability to provide a sense of security, but also to offer a place for carefree conviviality, for intimate togetherness or melancholy solitude, has always made it a special subject of art. Famous paintings such as Peter Paul Rubens' "Honeysuckle Bower" or Caspar David Friedrich's "Garden Bower" are examples of this. On the other hand, they are also used as retreats for creative spirits, as places of artistic inspiration, for example in the form of Friedrich Schiller's "Gartenzinne", Jean Paul Friedrich Richter's summerhouse stays and Annette von Droste-Hülshoff's "Fürstenhäusle".
The lecture embarks on a journey to prominent, but also little-known arbor motifs in the visual arts as well as to famous or hidden arbor sojourns by artists. It thus conveys a multifaceted picture of an otherwise little-illuminated topic of our garden culture.
