Tag des offenen Denkmals im MEERESMUSEUM
The MEERESMUSEUM has been housed in the former Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen since 1951. On Open Monument Day, we invite you to take a look at the history of the building.
Excavation manager Dr. Jörg Ansorge provides insights into the archaeological investigations between 2020 and 2023 and traces the development of the monastery building founded by Dominican monks in 1251 - from a medieval princely court to today's MEERESMUSEUM. Exciting finds that came to light during the recent renovation work will be presented, including skeletons with unusual burial features, fieldstone foundations of a predecessor church and other surprising archaeological discoveries.
Admission is free - donations are requested.
