Orchesterkonzert DER WALD

Orchestral concert THE FOREST with excerpts from Beethoven's 6th Symphony "Pastorale" and from the opera "The Forest" by Ethel Smyth as well as a reading by Paula Dieckmann

DER WALD - Music and science in Greifswald
with sound exhibition, action day and large orchestra concert

A young orchestra comes to Greifswald and asks itself: What does the forest sound like? How do we feel about nature, about landscapes such as the moor or the sea? What are Greifswald scientists researching? Can this research be "set to music" - made audible? The musicians of ensemble reflektor will be exploring these questions with a sound exhibition on the rampart, an activity day for young and old and a large orchestral concert in the cathedral, inviting you to a week full of music and science - and many new encounters!

Orchestral concert DER WALD
with excerpts from Beethoven's 6th Symphony "Pastorale" and from the opera "The Forest" by Ethel Smyth as well as a reading by Paula Dieckmann

Landscapes such as the forest or the moor are deeply rooted in our cultural memory through fairy tales and legends, stories and music. Our emotional connection is incredibly strong: childhood memories, solitary forest walks and impressive nature documentaries shape our relationship with nature. The young chamber orchestra ensemble reflektor explores this in an orchestral concert under the direction of Valentin Egel and performs musical works from three centuries that evoke and sing about nature. The music speaks for itself, but how does today's science view the forest and other ecosystems? What problems, changes and hopes do we face? What do scientists want for the future of our forests, seas and moors? The ensemble asked several scientists from the University of Greifswald and documented their answers. The result is an extraordinary, very personal text, which - interwoven with the music - is read in concert by the actress Paula Dieckmann and brings to life the multifaceted nature and significance of Greifswald's research.
