"Wrecks" von Neil LaBute
One-person play - guest performance by the Viennese theater theater2go
The reception of antiquity in contemporary American theater: in WRECKS, Neil LaBute transposes the protagonist from the Oedipus myth to the reality of American life. Edward Carr is given away as a baby, builds up a rental car "empire" and finds the love of his life in his older wife Jo-Jo. But behind this American dream lies the Greek myth. What is tragedy here? And how does Edward Carr, the modern Oedipus, deal with guilt and responsibility?
The American author Neil LaBute likes to explore the depths of the human soul in "stories that are as fantastic, interesting and remote as possible", as he says himself. In doing so, he draws on material from Greek myths.
Our production WRECKS was selected by Theaterland Steiermark as a festival entry for the Theatertage Weissenbach in Austria in 2022.
