Nordischer Klang 2025: VerReise ans Ende der Welt. Fridtjof Nansens Arktisfotos
Nordic Sound 2025: Journey to the end of the world. Fridtjof Nansen's Arctic photos
The attempt to reach the northernmost point in the world - the North Pole. With his pioneering Arctic expedition at the end of the 19th century, the Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen set off in the specially constructed ship Fram to explore previously unknown territory. He had his ship locked in the ice north of Siberia in the hope of getting closer to his goal. However, this attempt at transportation failed, whereupon he and Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen decided to continue the expedition on skis - a great challenge and a race against time.
Photographs taken by Nansen himself tell of everyday life surrounded by ice, of the research carried out on the expedition and of the obstacles the crew had to overcome. A potentially fatal undertaking that ultimately had a happy ending.
