Auf, auf in die Karrendorfer Wiesen
In spring, there is a lot to discover in the salt grassland of the Karrendorf meadows. Learn more about the coastal flooded bog on a guided excursion.
Just a few kilometers from Greifswald are the Karrendorfer Wiesen - a true natural paradise that is protected by the Michael Succow Foundation as part of the National Natural Heritage. This unique coastal flooded bog impresses not only with its extraordinary biodiversity, but also with the constant dynamics of nature. Specialized plants thrive on 350 hectares of rare salt grassland, while numerous waders and waterfowl breed, rest or overwinter here. At the same time, the growing salt marsh peatlands store valuable carbon and thus actively contribute to climate protection.
In spring, an impressive natural spectacle unfolds in the Karrendorf meadows. The air is filled with the song of skylarks, while lapwings impress with spectacular courtship flights. Geese and ducks have long since formed pairs, and in the shallow waters, limicoles rest on their long journey to Arctic breeding grounds. There are exciting observations to be made everywhere - whether for bird enthusiasts, nature lovers or anyone simply looking for a break in the midst of wild beauty.
Guided excursion: experience nature up close!
If you would like to discover the Karrendorf meadows more intensively, you are cordially invited to take part in our three-hour nature conservation tour. Together with the foundation's federal volunteers, we start at the parking lot in Groß Karrendorf and follow the causeway to the bridge in front of Koos Island. Along the way, you will learn how tides and flooding shape the area, which animal and plant species live here and why the protection of this special landscape is so essential.
Participation is on a donation basis - every contribution helps to preserve this valuable ecosystem in the long term.
As places are limited, please register at inselkoos@succow-stiftung.de.
