Werke für Violoncello und Klavier
MAX REGER: Suite No. 1 in G major for violoncello
SERGEY RAKHMANINOV: Sonata in G minor for violoncello and piano, Vokalise op. 34 no. 14 for violoncello and piano etc.
Gregor Szramek (violoncello) and Stephanie Hoernes (piano) pay tribute to Sergei Rachmaninov and Max Reger with a special program to mark their 150th birthdays. In 1914/15, Reger created three suites for solo cello, of which Suite No. 1 in G major will be performed as part of this chamber concert. It is dedicated to one of the most important cello virtuosos of his time, Julius Klengel, who was to use it "as often as possible in lessons [...]" at the composer's request. Grouped around this work, which admittedly required a high level of mastery on the part of the student, are compositions by Rachmaninov, the 70th anniversary of whose death is being commemorated: the famous Sonata in G minor and the Vokalise op. 34 no. 14, which was the last of 14 romances to be included in his song cycle in 1915.
