Presentation of the work ‘Berühren’ as part of the exhibition IN TOUCH by Lisa Marie Steude

Installations and sculptures that unfold into the extended space through vibration and sound, or that interact with the audience

Lisa Marie Steude is interested in establishing connections between people and objects. Her works enable viewers to literally come into contact with art and, in some cases, to help shape it. In a sense, she takes a back seat as an artist in order to provide a – albeit limited – scope for creativity. Even when she collaborates with others, as in the case of some of the works on display in this exhibition, she believes that collaborative creation adds value.

She invites the audience to engage in a process of exchange with the artwork. In doing so, the artwork itself becomes an active participant. It no longer exists merely in material form, but interacts with its surroundings and ultimately engages the viewers. Some of the works on display may and should be touched in order to experience them in their entirety. Others are only activated through the viewer’s own actions. Furthermore, tactile, olfactory and auditory elements complement the purely visual aspects. This initiates a comprehensive experience of great intensity.

A site-specific sound installation has been created especially for the exhibition at Klempenow Castle. To this end, the artist conducted research within the castle walls and at the archaeological site of a Bronze Age battle in the Tollense Valley, recording original sounds using specialised microphones. In doing so, she speculates on the power of sounds to preserve and convey hidden knowledge. By recognising their intrinsic sonic value, she also highlights the creative power of sounds, of which we are often unaware.
