Hannah Steinbrecher – "Skrandis"
Objects and installation
The title ‘Skrandis’ is the Lithuanian word for ‘stomach’. The installation draws on the forms and elements of the human digestive system, translating them into sewn fabric objects and a system of connections. Objects of varying appearances hang from the ceiling or are scattered across the floor. Together, they form a complex structure of organic shapes in shades of pink and white. Alongside traditional textile materials, plastic and metal are also used.
This combination of materials highlights the fact that artificial and industrially manufactured materials are increasingly becoming part of our inner selves. At the same time, the varying densities and surfaces of the materials used reflect the complexity of the digestive system and the cells and tissues involved in it. A central element of the installation is a textile representation of a stomach. It is filled with 300 g of popcorn and 800 g of buckwheat, making a physical condition visually tangible.
Hannah Steinbrecher is a student of Fine Art at the Caspar-David-Friedrich Institute at the University of Greifswald. The art-cube e.V. art association aims to support young artists and offer them the opportunity to develop and present their current artistic work. Once a year, a student is invited to hold an exhibition, showcasing an innovative artistic approach.
