Sunrise in the cathedral
Experience the east windows in Greifswald Cathedral, designed by Olafur Eliasson in 2024, at the moment when their light floods the entire cathedral.
The window project was part of the Hanseatic and university town of Greifswald's celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich's birth. Ólafur Elíasson's design is a tribute to the great Greifswald Romantic, who was baptised in St. Nikolai in 1774. The work of art is unique in Europe as a church window: a light spectrum based on Friedrich's painting "Hutten's Grave" is built into the glass window front - with mouth-blown panes in 65 colours, which were produced in the Hein Derix Kevelaer glass workshop. Numerous effect mirrors are installed between the window front and the inner choir, reflecting the colourful light back onto the inner choir.
