The conductor
Cinema in the old fire station
Antonia Brico was born in Rotterdam, the daughter of an unmarried Catholic woman. Her foster parents named her Wilhelmina Wolthuis and emigrated with her to the USA. In California, the talented pianist also studied conducting, as she was determined to become a conductor. But in 1929, this profession was still exclusively for men. Wilhelmina was not deterred in her desire and managed to make her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 24.
