Life on the coast. For some people, this is not just life by the sea, but also with and on the sea: sailing, for example. Once you've succumbed to the fascination of sailing, it's hard to get away from it.

But sailing is not always just about sport, leisure or adventure.
In the past, sailing often meant earning a hard living; fishing or transporting goods and merchandise across rivers, canals and seas. And in almost any weather...
It didn't have much to do with the romance of today's leisure sailing.
This makes it all the more important and wonderful that there are people who remember these traditions and restore, cherish and maintain the relics from the old days.
These include the Zeesen boats of the Saaler Bodden as well as the shark cutters of the Baltic Sea or the other former working ships, many of which have now found a berth in museum harbors such as Greifswald.

The photo exhibition aims to do justice to all these aspects of sailing - with fishing boats, on working ships and modern yachts. The photographs were taken in the region over a period of around 15 years.

The author

Thomas Lange - born in '62 - has lived in Greifswald since 1978.
Trained and worked at the Lubmin nuclear power plant, since the beginning of the nineties he has worked in heating customer service after reorientation.
Married, two grown-up children.
SLR photography since the end of the 80s. Initially with an Exakta Varex and Prakticas, since '93 with Nikon's, from the end of 2007 change to digital SLR cameras.
Member of Photoclub Nord Greifswald since 1988.
