Madleen Kröner from Radentscheid Schwerin reports on the efforts to set up the first school road in Schwerin and shows what has been achieved so far. Radentscheid is a non-partisan citizens' initiative and has been campaigning for better cycle paths in Schwerin for five years.

According to an ADAC survey from spring 2023, every fourth primary school child is driven to school by their parents. The vast majority of parents have a negative view of parent cabs, including a relatively large proportion of parents who regularly use them themselves. Last year, around 27,000 children were injured in road traffic in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 6 to 14-year-olds are most frequently involved in accidents on their bicycles and usually on weekday mornings.
School roads are one way to change this. They are not yet part of the German road traffic regulations, but it is still possible to set them up within the framework of existing legal standards. School streets are temporarily closed roads that are closed to motorized traffic at the beginning and end of the school day.
